Confucius (2010)
孔子 (Kong Qui)
Chow Yun Fat, Zhou Xun, Xu Huanshan
125 Min
Language(s): Mandarin
Subtitles: Chinese, English, Malay

The great sage and philosopher Confucius lived in the 6th century B.C., at a time when China was still a patchwork of feudal states vying with each other for supremacy. The Zhou Dynasty was tottering, incapable of unifying the various kingdoms, and there were incessant local wars over land and power. Confucius was born in the kingdom of Lu and rose to serve in its government. His skillfully engineered a peace with aggressive neighboring states and brought three dominant local clans under control. But his brilliance as a thinker and tactician was not enough to save him from being exiled by his political enemies, and he spent many years wandering and teaching a band of loyal disciples. His followers transcribed his lectures, collected as The Analects of Confucius, a volume which has been in print for well over 200 years.
The man we know as Confucius (a Latinized version of Kong Fuzi - "Venerable Master Kong") was born Kong Qiu in 551 B.C., the son of a declining aristocrat in the kingdom of Lu. His early life was frugal. The world around him was collapsing, and he had radical, innovative ideas for reforming and stabilizing it. Enjoying the confidence of the ruler of Lu, he is promoted from Mayor of Zhongdu to Minister of Rituals in the court and begins to apply his principle of civility in everything from diplomatic relations with warlike neighboring kingdoms to domestic relations within the family. After a series of diplomatic triumphs he is promoted again to become Interior Minister. His ambitious plan to curb the power of Lu's three dominant clans succeeds at first, and he is equally triumphant in outwitting the renegade general who leads an army against the Lu court. But the head of Qi clan seduces the ruler of Lu with gold, horses and women and persuades him to send Confucius into exile. Stripped of his official title, the sage sorrowfully leaves his wife and children behind and embarks on a new life as a wanderer. He is surprised and moved when members of his loyal retinue opt to join him in his travels.
Their life as wanderers is not easy. Confucius withstands both temptations and hardships, and is more than once forced to flee when another local war breaks out. Eventually, many years later, he is invited back to Lu, once again threatened by a political coup. But he agrees to return only as a teacher, refusing to involve himself in politics, and spends his declining years studying and collating the classics. History records that he died a disappointed man, but his work outlived the "Spring and Autumn Period" in which he lived and echoed through the dynasties to become the very bedrock of Chinese civilization. This film tells the story of the turbulent life and stirring times of the greatest sage and teacher ever known.

50 episodes
Language(s): Mandarin, Cantonese
Subtitles: Chinese, English, Malay

The protagonist, Yang Guo, is the orphaned son of Yang Kang, the antagonist in The Legend of the Condor Heroes. The couple Guo Jing and Huang Rong take Yang Guo under their care for a short period of time before sending him to the Quanzhen Sect on Mount Zhongnan for better guidance in moral values and orthodox martial arts. In Quanzhen, Yang Guo is often picked on and bullied by his fellow students, and discriminated against by his master, Zhao Zhijing. Yang Guo flees from Quanzhen and ventures unknowingly into the nearby Tomb of the Living Dead, where the Ancient Tomb Sect is housed. He is saved by Xiaolongnü, a mysterious maiden of unknown origin, and becomes her apprentice. They live together in the tomb for many years until Yang Guo grows up.
Yang Guo and Xiaolongnü develop romantic feelings for each other, but their romance is forbidden by the prevailing norms of the jianghu (or wulin, the community of martial artists). Throughout the story, their love meets with several tests, such as the misunderstandings that threaten to tear them apart, and their encounter with Gongsun Zhi, whom Xiaolongnü almost marries at one point. Finally, after their reunion and marriage, Xiaolongnü leaves Yang Guo again, owing to her belief she cannot recover from a fatal poison, and promises to meet him again 16 years later. While Yang Guo is wandering the jianghu alone, he meets several formidable martial artists and a giant condor, and improves his skills tremendously after learning from them. His adventures gradually mould him into a courageous hero and perhaps the most powerful martial artist of his time. Yang Guo serves his native land by helping the Han Chinese people of the Song Empire resist invaders from the Mongol Empire. At the end of the novel, he is reunited with Xiaolongnü and they leave to lead the rest of their lives in seclusion after receiving praises and blessings from the wulin.

The government has imposed a nationwide ban on the practice of all martial arts, in an attempt to maintain law and order throughout the land.
Evil general Fire Wind (Sun Hong Lei) seeks to profit from this situation by leading a squad of executioners through the country, killing anyone caught practicing martial arts, and collecting a bounty from the government for doing so. He heads directly for Martial Village, a small settlement that so far has managed to hold out against the Manchurians invading force, but has yet to encounter Fire Wind and his army.
Fu Qing Zhu (Lau Ka Leung, who also serves as the film's stunt coordinator) plays a retired executioner from the previous dynasty, who warns the villagers of the impending threat. Together with two young warriors, Wu Yian Yin (Charlie Yeung) and Han Zhi Bang (Lu Yi), Fu journeys to Mount Heaven to seek help from the great master of swords, Master Shadow Glow (Ma Jing Wu). Shaolin Traitorous
Polly Shang-Kuan, Samo Hung, Carter Wong, Chang Yi
85 Min
Language(s): English
Subtitles: none

As a child, Yang witnesses the murder of his parents by three kung fu masters. His father, a Ming loyalist was kicked out of his political post and now a Ming traitor named Tin Erh-keng (Ching Yi) and his two lieutenants magnificently ride in on horseback to finish them off. Sammo Hung and Hau Pak-wai do most of the dirty work in a gruesome fight to the finish. Yang's mother dies wearing a bracelet with bells on it and this becomes an important plot device throughout the film as years later, he carries the bracelet and its sound reminds the killers of their deed. The child finds his way to Shaolin and patiently waits outside until admitted and is later accepted as a student by one of the elder monks. The training is painlessly short compared with other Shaolin tales and consists of carrying buckets up stairs, leaping out of pits, and actual combat training. One important skill is his ability to puncture objects with his fingers, as his main foe shares the same ability. Although the 'Bronzemen' make an appearance as statues, Yang has no trouble leaving the temple ready to find the killers and make mincemeat of them.
With his backstory told, Yang now becomes the nameless hero who wanders into town and aids the afflicted while searching for the killers. An unexpected foe comes in the form of a woman named Hisao Yun-erh (Polly Kuan), Tin's adopted daughter. She challenges Yang in one of the better teahouse confrontations. The match is unresolved, although Yang has the upper hand in more ways than one. Ultimately, Yang has to deal with Hsiao, figure out a way to get past a wild kung fu multi-man formation known as the Tien Lo Set, and defeat the lieutenants in order to challenge Tin himself.
